San Franciscans love Coit Tower because of its grand upward thrust into the skyline. Some claim that Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who gifted the tower to the City was enamored of firefighters and they say the tower represents a fire hose. But so much in life is about metaphor and others claim that she was actually enamored of the firefighters' *hoses*. Like the small alleyways in SF supposedly named for the brothel owners who worked there, there are no certain answers. I choose to believe that whatever Lillie actually intended, that Coit Tower stands like a beacon of barely hidden desire in this city of unbridled passion.
